This year, there will be no salmon fishing off California. The lack of salmon will directly impact the Southern Resident killer whales, who were foraging in Monterey Bay just this month—their first visit since 2019. Finally, the work to remove these dams and restore this essential river habitat has started this week. This gives us hope for breaching the lower Snake River dams and restoring the Columbia River Basin, historically the most prolific salmon river system in the lower 48 and vital to these endangered whales.
