Southern Resident killer whales evolved to eat Chinook salmon—a species once plentiful throughout the pacific coastal region. Each killer whale needs around 20 full-bodied salmon per day to survive, but they’re not getting nearly enough. Fisheries managers in charge of determining harvest levels are not adequately accounting for their needs, pushing them further towards the brink of extinction.
