To recover Southern Resident killer whales, public policy and regulation must be rooted in accurate and timely science.

We work directly with stakeholders, organizations and management agencies to ensure that decisions are made based on the best available science and an understanding of the urgency required for recovery.

Fair Fisheries

The Southern Resident killer whales rely on Chinook salmon for their survival. Yet this species is prized by commercial fisheries, putting the whales in direct competition. We are working to establish fair fisheries to ensure that a quota of the annual catch is reserved for the needs of endangered Southern Resident killer whales.

Habitat Restoration

Healthy habitat is essential to support wild Pacific salmon. Yet centuries of human intervention has resulted in loss and degradation, drastically reducing salmon spawning and rearing areas in streams and rivers. We believe that restoring habitat—through dam breaching and other large-scale restoration projects is essential to save wild salmon and the killer whales that depend on them.

Habitat Protection

Protected habitats are essential to safeguard endangered species, to ensure an adequate food supply, and to provide safe refuge from harmful human activities. We believe that the Southern Resident killer whales’ critical habitat, especially close to salmon rivers, should be a prey-rich environment, free from noise, disturbance and harmful contaminants that pollute their environment, and their food supply.
